For the first time ever in western culture, “man” has become endangered. Of course, we are not meaning endangered in the biological sense. Just under half of the human race is male. We are speaking in a cultural sense. Manhood is under attack from all sides.
More males than ever have entered adulthood without father figures or acceptable role models. As a result, they are spending more time glued to video game consoles and other electronic devices than learning real-life skills. The role models they look up to on these screens tend to be athletes, musicians, and actors, who might be skilled in an entertaining us, but many live extremely reprobate lives filled with drugs, sex, violence, and crime.
The values, skills, and behaviors that have been traditionally taught to young men by their fathers, or other male role models in their communities, have been replaced with video games, movies, TV, music, gang life, and other poor external role models. Young people seek role models. If they cannot find them easily in their homes, they look elsewhere.
It is time to take manhood back. It is time for us to begin teaching young men the value of hard work, the fun of getting your hands dirty, the importance of providing for our families, and how to treat and serve others with a Biblical mindset.
This is just the starting point of where I want to take this blog. In MAN SKILLS, I want to expand the idea of manliness outside the realm of the perfectly manicured beard and folding the perfect pocket square. In MAN SKILLS you will find everything from how to apply a tourniquet on a massive bleed to the virtues of manly patience, from the proper use of a speed square to the importance of developing a firm handshake, from the most efficient way to mow your lawn to developing assertive behaviors over passive and aggressive ones.
The MAN SKILLS blog is an opinion blog. Writings will be based on the things I have learned from the outdoors, from on the job, and from other good men. MAN SKILLS is not news, not political commentary, and not affiliated with ANY social group. MAN SKILLS is 100% opinion with one exception – when the writings are based on Biblical principles of truth.
That starts here with the mission of this blog which is derived from the following verses:
- “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” (1 Corinthians 16:13 ESV)
- “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” (1 Corinthians 13:11)
- “Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.” (Proverbs 22:29)
Therefore, the mission of the MAN SKILLS blog is:
To assist men in setting aside childishness and developing strong masculine values (including guarding and protecting ourselves, families, communities, countries, and our faith in Christ), increasing skills in self-reliance, and setting ourselves apart from worldly and selfish behavior.
